Oversized to Fitted Sweater Dress

I bought this sweater dress at JC Penney a couple of years ago. It was the year I started wearing leggings and sweater dresses and of course my wardrobe search began in the clearance section. I actually really liked this sweater dress when I first bought it and I always wore it with a belt.

In the past year or so my style has evolved (mostly thanks to reading fashion blogs) and this sweater just didn’t fit right to me anymore. It was too baggy in the arm and waist area. I hadn’t worn it at all this winter. Every time I pulled it out of the closet, it went back in in favor of my more fitted sweaters dresses.
I decided to make this sweater dress work for me again by making it more fitted. I started by laying it out on the floor and laid another sweater on top that fit the way I like.

I used a piece of tailors chalk to draw lines where I would sew. I didn’t follow the dress all the way down because I only wanted to take in the arm/chest/waist area. The bottom of the dress fit fine.

I pinned the sides of the dress to keep it from moving around and sewed down my chalk line. Then I tried it on to check the fit and I ended up taking it in a little bit more. I chopped off the extra and ran a zig zag stitch over the edges because the sweater material started fraying like crazy.

Now I could get away without belting it because it actually fits me in the waist. I am excited to have this dress back in the possible outfit rotation!

Here’s a couple of outfits I put together using my newly refashioned sweater dress.
