This may not be the most practical hat but it sure is cute! Before Lincoln was born I was obsessed with making him as many different hats as possible and I really wanted a Christmas themed hat to take his pictures in. I searched forever on Ravelry and Pinterest and had a lot of trouble making a decision. There are so many cute possibilities!

I finally decided on the long tailed baby elf hat pattern from Ooodles for Noodles (Update: This pattern is no longer available). I used a small amount of Red Heart Super Saver red and white yarn from my stash and made the pom pom with my pom pom maker.

This hat was super simple to make since it’s mostly double crochet. I made a small modification to the ribbing and alternated between front post double crochet and back post double crochet because I wanted a real ribbed look. The ribbing gives it a super stretchy brim so it fit Lincoln at 6 days old and it still fits at 5 weeks with room to grow. It would be super easy to adapt to a bigger size by adding some extra increases before starting the ribbing.

The first three pictures are from when Lincoln was 6 days old and last two are at 5 weeks old.
