Easy Crochet Newborn Hat Free Pattern

My friend recently had a baby girl. She already had a son and for her second child wanted she didn’t want to find out the sex before hand. When I found out she had a girl I immediately wanted to make her a cute hat to wear home from the hospital. I created this really quick and easy hat pattern. I finished the hat and the flower in about 2 hours. I started the night I found out about the baby and finished on my lunch break the next day. It was ready when we went to the hospital for a visit.

Materials:
Worsted weight yarn in two colors. I used Caron Simply Soft.
G hook
Tapestry needle

Gauge: 1st 4 rows measured from center to edge= 2 in.
This hat will measure 12 inches in around and 5 inches long. It will fit a head 12- 14 1/2 inches. If you want to make it longer add extra rows at the end.

Abbreviations:
Ch= chain
Dc= double crochet
Ss= slip stitch

Instructions 12 inch size:

Ch 3 does not count as a dc
Rnd 1: Ch 4. 10 dc in 3rd chain from hook. Join with a ss to top of first dc. (10 dc)
Rnd 2: Ch 3. 2 dc in each dc. Join with a ss to stop of first dc. (20 dc)
Rnd 3: Ch 3. (1 dc in first stitch, 2 dc in next stitch) repeat around. Join with a ss to top of first dc. (30 dc)
Rnd 4: Ch 3. (1 dc in first two stitches, 2 dc in next stitch) repeat around. Join with a ss to top of first dc. (40 dc)
Rnd 5- 10: Ch 3: 1 dc in each stitch. Join with a ss to top of first dc. Weave in ends. (40 dc)

Update: I modified this pattern to be 14 inches around. Use an H hook.

Instructions 14 inch size:
Rnd 1: Ch 4. 10 dc in 3rd chain from hook. Join with a ss to top of first dc. (10 dc)
Rnd 2: Ch 3. 2 dc in each dc. Join with a ss to stop of first dc. (20 dc)
Rnd 3: Ch 3. (1 dc in first stitch, 2 dc in next stitch) (30 dc)
Rnd 4: Ch 3. (1 dc in first two stitches, 2 dc in next stitch) repeat around.  Join with a ss to top of first dc. (40 dc)
Rnd 5: (1 dc in first seven stitches, 2 dc in next stitch) repeat around. Join with a ss to top of first dc. (45 dc)
6-11: Ch 3. 1 dc in each stitch. Join with a ss to top of first dc. Weave in ends. (45 dc)

For the flower I used this Irish rose pattern. This is my absolute favorite flower pattern. I only made two rounds so it would fit on the hat. You can use the flower pattern or one of your choice. When finished, stitch it on to hat.

Here is sweet Audrey modeling her hat. She is about one month old in these pics and her head is 14 3/8 inches. You can see how the hat fits her like a beanie. If you want a longer length or to be able to fold up the bottom add 2 more rows to the hat.

    Such a cute hat. Thank you for sharing. However, the link to the Irish Rose pattern seems to be broken. Would you please post the pattern?
