I’m really excited to share this DIY LEGO table with you today aka the coolest project we have ever done. Pictures just do not describe how much fun this table is. If you have a kid with LEGOs then you know how hard it is to keep them organized. I was about ready to get rid of all our LEGOs. The pieces were all mixed up. I couldn’t find anything. Lincoln was always breaking the stuff we built. Any of that sound familiar? Then this project is the answer to all your LEGO woes!
The great thing about creating your own DIY LEGO table is that you get to pick the colors. This table blends right in with our furniture and decor just like it was meant to be in the space. If you have ever looked at premade LEGO tables they can be quite colorful. Also many of them are enormous and we don’t have the room for a huge table in our family room. Customizing the table to your tastes and space is a great reason to DIY. Plus you will probably also save money creating your table.
Depending on your table you may or may not need to paint it. We found our end table at a local thrift store for only $5! Clearly no one saw the vision we did. The color was really dated but the shelf underneath and small drawer for storage made it perfect for our lego table. When looking for a table I recommend finding one with a place for storage. A small drawer is great and also a place to put a basket or two.
LEGO plates can easily be found on Amazon or Target. I scored mine when Target was clearancing their toys in January and discontinued the color I bought. Gray and tan plates are great choices for a neutral LEGO table.
We added casters to our table and it was such a great idea because we can move the table around to the best place for playing. Right now it’s in between the two chairs in our family room and it’s the perfect spot to sit and work on the table but we can easily move it out of the way if we need more space.
I’m listing out all the supplies I used for my project, you can adjust what you need depending on whether or not you need to paint your table.
Supplies:
End table
Casters
To start out Mike drilled holes in the table legs to install the casters. Once that was done he used deglosser to prep the surface of the table for paint. The table was in pretty good shape, just outdated so it didn’t need a ton of prep work to get it ready for paint.
Next he painted two coats of General Finishes lamp black on the table. We made this fun and let Lincoln help to paint his table. He was pretty excited about getting a lego table and really wanted to help. He did a pretty good job except for putting a liiiitle too much paint on his brush.
After the paint was dry, Mike used the final stripping pad to smooth out any imperfections in the finish and put on two coats of General Finishes high performance topcoat in flat. In between each coat he used the final stripping pad to keep the surface smooth.
He also painted the handle with Rustoleum spray paint in silver to give it an update with the rest of the table.
After the table was dry he laid out the LEGO plates and there was a slight overlap over the sides. He marked where they needed to be cut and used a razor blade to cut the plates. Once they were the right size he took a couple of LEGO blocks and connected the plates making sure to keep the non cut side in the center so the LEGOs still fit properly over the seam. Then he glued the plates onto the table with the liquid nails.
The best part of the the table is that we have been having fun creating our very own LEGO city to play with all the LEGO guys. We were able to setup all the structures so they don’t get broken all the time. We’ve been working to edit by adding, subtracting and moving around the pieces we have or just building new structures out of random pieces. It has made the LEGOs so much less stressful and allows some of them to be left out which encourages Lincoln to play with them more. Plus we are all really enjoying the DIY LEGO table and this has been such a fun family project.
