When we first moved into our house there were no towel racks in our bathroom. I’m not sure how the previous homeowners survived but we immediately put up a couple hooks for our towels. They weren’t anything fancy but they got the job done. Fast forward almost two years later and as part of our bathroom makeover we decided to make a custom modern farmhouse DIY towel rack.
Our master bathroom is pretty large but there is almost zero usable wall space since there is a closet and an enormous vanity. We needed a towel rack to fit in a very specific space so we decided the best route was just to make our own. Mike had just made a DIY coat rack for us and it was super easy plus customized for the space. He decided he would just make the same thing in our bathroom only with a different look.

Saw (or have the boards cut at the home improvement store)
Mike started off with an inexpensive pine board. He measured the space in the bathroom and cut the board to size. He wanted to hang the racks in three different spaces and they were all different sizes.
Next he stained the board using a rag with two coats of Minwax Early American. We picked this color to complement the wood doors and mirror frame in the bathroom. After the stain dried he coated the boards with two coats of polyacrylic using a foam brush to protect them.
After the boards were done he drilled them into the wall with an electric drill and drywall screws.
After the boards were installed he used a drill to attach the adorable hooks I ordered off of Amazon. I was dying to use these hooks and the black hook really pops against the color of the board. Each board took a different amount of hooks and he hung the one set of hooks vertically to fit in the tiny piece of wall next to our shower.
Now we actually have a place to hang our towels in our bathroom on these awesome modern farmhouse DIY towel racks. We also have extra hooks to hang a robe or clothes for the next day. They are super sturdy and we never would have been able to get these sizes from the store. They add just the right touch of modern farmhouse to the look of the bathroom and the wood helps to warm up the neutral look I’m going for in the space.
This picture shows our still very dated shower door. You can see how we fit another towel rack on this tiny piece of wall here. Perfect for stepping out of the shower. Still trying to figure out ways to update this door without breaking the budget so we may just be living with it for awhile.
