When we first looked at our house I fell in love with the master bathroom space. Having an attached master with a separate shower and soaking tub was an absolute dream. The only issues is the aesthetic of not anywhere close to our style. Dated fixtures, crusty hardware and a mismatched color scheme don’t exactly scream luxurious bathroom. I’m excited to say that we are finally getting to start on our DIY master bathroom remodel.
The thing is, we have a pretty tight budget so we are working with what we’ve got. The fewer changes the better as we don’t have $10-20k to drop on a major bathroom remodel, even if the space in our bathroom isn’t exactly laid out the best. It’s still an amazing space and with our plans no one will ever know it used to be a mismatched mess. We are going to take it into this decade instead of the late eighties vibe it has going on right now.
Here’s a before shot of the space:
Our plans include:
Paint
Painting the ceiling, trim, walls and cabinet. Painting goes a really long way to update a space. The ceiling will be Olympic ceiling paint. The trim is Valspar Swiss Coffee. We’ve used both colors in the rest of the house. We picked out Sherwin Williams Agreeable Gray for the walls. We used it in our hall and I love how neutral the gray is. The cabinet color is still TBD although I am leaning towards a dark gray.
Replace the cabinet hardware
I absolutely can. not. stand. that hardware. It’s rusty brass with ornate detail that reminds me of the silverware we had when I was growing up. I actually feel anxious every time I look at it. So it has to go.
Replace the shower door
This one is going to be a budget breaker. Through some research we’ve found we can replace the door without replacing the whole shower. While this will be the biggest cost in the budget, it’s going to look fantastic.
Address the mixed metal confusion
Brass, silver and rubbed bronze are just too much for one space. Brass is definitely out. The design question we are working on is whether we will go silver, rubbed bronze or both. The hardware in the house is all rubbed bronze. The fixtures are all silver. Replacing all the fixtures will be an expense I’m not sure we want to add. Decisions, decisions.
Do something with the light fixtures
Not sure if this is a complete replace or if we replace the sconces. This will depend on our mixed metal decision.
A new curtain or blind above the tub
The current one is old, dated and broken.
Art or shelves on the walls around the tub
We really don’t have much wall space in this room that isn’t taken up by the closet or the massive mirror. The space is lacking personality.
What we are keeping:
The floors
They may not be my first choice but they have been updated probably sometime in the last decade. They are neutral enough to work around.
The layout
No moving around any plumbing for us.
The door color
We’re going to leave the door wood as we have done that with the rest of the house. It’s amazing how much better that door will look framed in white. Plus I’m digging the two tone wood look we have going on in the house.
The mirror
Right now the plan is to leave it wood. We both think it will look better once the space around it is updated and tie back to the closet door. We reserve the right to change our mind here though.
I found some fun items on Amazon I would love to bring into the bathroom. Some rustic touches and greenery will help tie everything together.
Rustic wood shelf
Galvanized toilet paper holder
Farmhouse light fixture
Soap Dispenser
Olive Branches
Box shelves
Faucet towel rack
Bin pulls
Soap and water sign
Glass vase
Good day sign
