I’ve been searching the stores lately for cute Valentine’s day decor and I have been striking out. I haven’t been able to find much rustic or farmhouse style Valentine’s Day decor so I decided I needed to make something myself. I’m loving cute Valentine’s Day prints so I decided to create my own Rustic Valentine’s Day Art. It is looking great right now up on my Valentine’s Day mantel.
8×10 wood frame
First I found an old 8×10 frame in pile of unused frames in our basement. The frame was a bit beat up and I didn’t care for the color so I pulled out my paintbrush and a creamy white paint sample from when we were testing color for our trim paint. I hardly used any paint so any white or cream color would work for this.
Next I dry brushed the white paint onto the frame. My process was to dip the very end of the brush in the paint and wipe the excess off on the side of the container. Sometimes I dabbed it on a paper towel if I got too much. Using light strokes I brushed it onto the frame, purposefully not covering everything. If the paint went on too thick I wiped it off with a paper towel.
I went over the frame with these very light coats three times and then let it dry. I tried it out on the mantel and felt like it needed more coats so I put on another two coats to build up to the look I was going for. This is really an art not a science. Layering lightly helped to build up an aged look on the frame where the wood still peeked through.
Next up I needed art. I went into Canva and had some fun coming up with several different designs. I showed them all to Mike and the bike picture won out as his choice. (I was rooting for this one too but loved them all.)
I printed the picture out and then placed my glass from the picture frame down on the print, drew a line around and cut it out to fit. After a little glass cleaner to clean up my smudgey fingerprints this Valentine’s Day art was all ready for my mantel.
Now I have a bonus for you. I wanted to share all this cute Valentine’s Day love themed art. Just click the link below to print a PDF of 6 Valentine’s Day prints to help you decorate your space. They don’t have to just be used for Valentine’s Day since many of them would look cute any time.
